A Paragraph With The Mariners – 158

I’m dedicating one of my last Paragraphs to Jason Vargas, who just finished his season with a 6-inning gem today.  0 earned runs, only 5 hits and 1 walk with 2 strike outs.  He made 31 starts this year, posting a 3.78 ERA to go along with his 9-12 record.  Rounding out the traditional stats:  he struck out 116 while walking only 54, and he pitched in 192.2 innings on the season.  For a #4 or #5 starter, that’s pretty much baseball gold right there.  Fortunately for him, that means he’s pretty much a lock for the rotation next year.  Unfortunately for the rest of us, we’re waterlogged with #4 and #5 starters in this rotation; no one wants to see Felix followed by four days of Vargas!  Or, Christ, I guess we do, but it just gets tedious after a while … WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GO AND GET HURT BEDARD!?!?  I’m getting off topic here.  This is about Jason Vargas and all the kudos he deserves.  These are by far the most innings he’s ever pitched in one season, so let’s hope he can hold up next year.  But, if someone’s gotta get hurt due to being overworked in 2010, I hope it’s you Vargas and not Felix.  This post didn’t go as complimentary as I’d planned.
