Oakland’s Magic Number Is 1

On the one hand, you can say the Mariners have officially clinched “Last Place” in the AL West.  There are 5 games remaining, the Mariners are 5 games behind Oakland; even if the unthinkable were to happen (Mariners win out, Oakland loses out), the Mariners could only TIE Oakland, which means we would be TIED for Last Place.

Hi, I live in Seattle.  It’s gloomy 9 months of the year, and we get to root for more last place finishes than any other city!

Actually, I don’t know if that’s true, but it sounds like a project for another day.

I don’t have a whole lot to say on the matter, I just thought it was funny.  Yeah, the Mariners are in last place again, but also because THIS is the weekend that “Moneyball” comes out in theaters.  Gotta love that Moneyball … exactly HOW many championships did Moneyball get you before everyone else took your idea (or just the best bits and parts of your idea) and ran with it?  That’s the only solace I’ll take from the fact that they knocked us out of the playoffs the last two seasons we were a ridiculously good baseball team in 2002 and 2003.

I’m a bitter, bitter man.  Enjoy your 3rd place finish, Oakland, and languish in the thought of What Could Have Been.
