How much of a slap in the face is it to be listed below the punter (or, for that matter, not listed at all)?
Hey, you know what? Don’t knock the punting position until you’ve lived without! In this case, I’m talking about the fact that our punter is awesome. Last year, Jon Ryan led all punters in punts downed inside the 20 yard line. That’s huge, I don’t even care. Any Johnny Strongleg out there can average 50+ yards, but it takes guys with real finesse to consistently and thoroughly pin the other team back when drives falter.
And make no mistake, this Seahawks offense is GOING to falter! We’re not the Patriots, we’re not the Packers. Hell, we’re not the Lions, the Giants, the Eagles, the Chargers, the Texans, the Cowboys, the Falcons, the Panthers, OR the Ravens. We’re most likely breaking in a new quarterback, we’ve got question marks up and down the wide receiver ranks, we’ve got injuries up and down the offensive line, and we still don’t know if Beastmode is going to be suspended or not.
So, like it or love it, the Seahawks are going to be doing their fair share of punting this season. Jon Ryan will help us a great deal. If he’s able to compensate for a weak offense, then that gives our defense that much more of an advantage (and remember, I think very highly of our defense as it’s currently constructed). If you give a Top 10 (or, who knows, even a Top 5) defense an awesome punter to work with, the other team is just asking for trouble.
Is Jon Ryan important? You’re damn right Jon Ryan is important. He might not be long-snapper important, but then again, who is?
