Free Agent Watch: Mariners Sign Jason Bay

The Mariners signed a corner outfield slugger, everybody!  Hooray?

You have to hate when new players you sign are compared to Chone Figgins.  As in:  Jason Bay is the Mets’ version of Chone Figgins, released with one year left on his mega-deal because of underperformance.  As in:  a total fucking disappointment for the last three years, but who knows, maybe a change of scenery will yadda yadda yadda.

I don’t know what to tell you.  It’s a 1-year deal for the minimum a figure close-enough to the minimum for me to not give a shit.  I’m sure it’ll be no sweat off our sack to release him in Spring Training if she shows he doesn’t have what it takes.  In that sense, people should probably calm down about Jason Bay “blocking someone else who will be more productive”.  Productivity is a relative term, anyway.  More productive than 2011 Jason Bay is pretty much anyone in baseball, and that’s not saying much when you’re talking about who the Mariners have trotted out there lately.  If you’re worried about the fate of Casper Wells, I suggest you heed the message in the following quote:

What do you mean brought it bowling, Dude? I didn’t rent it shoes. I’m not buying it a fucking beer. He’s not taking your fucking turn, Dude.

Mmmkay?  If Jason Bay continues to suck, or if he hurts himself, he’s gone.  Cutting a guy making the minimum is no risk whatsoever; hell, we JUST cut a guy making $8 million!  I think this team knows enough to cut someone when he’s underperforming on a 1-year deal.

And furthermore, why is everyone all of a sudden on the Casper Wells bandwagon?  Did I miss something?  Isn’t he the guy who batted .228 in a mostly-backup role last year?  Does a guy with a sub-.700 OPS automatically deserve the starting corner outfield job just because he’s a better defender than a 34 year old?  Doesn’t anyone care about positional competition anymore?

Fuck the numbers, fuck the defensive metrics, fuck everything else.  I just want the best baseball players on the field, plain and simple.  Obviously, if Bay’s defense is a complete hinderance, then don’t play him in the field.  But, if he shows he can still hit, what’s the problem with having him as a backup DH and a pinch hitter?  And if he can hold his own in left field, all the better.  Give me the best nine guys on the field and get the fuck out of my way.  I want WINS!  I don’t care how we get them as long as we get them.

On a slightly different track:  we’re in full swing with the Winter Meetings, and so far Jason Bay is the only guy we’ve brought in.  Whoop-de-fucking-doo.  Wake me up when we’ve done something that’s ACTUALLY going to impact our season next year.
