Huskies Fumble Their Commanding Lead

Odds are we weren’t going to win the remainder of our Pac-10 games anyway.  But I can’t help feeling that every loss we suffer is not only preventable, but shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

The Washington State Cougars are NOT a better basketball team than the Washington Huskies.  Let’s just get that out of the way right now.  Did they play better basketball last night to steal a victory (and maybe some Pac-10 momentum) from the number 1 team in the conference?  Of course.  They held the Number 2 scoring team in the nation to 37% shooting.  And they forced a team averaging 12 turnovers per game into 24 uncharacteristic mistakes.  I can’t even fathom 24 turnovers!  But, there they were, bashing our brains in.

I mean, you look at a team who got to the free throw line 29 times ON THE ROAD (making 23), you look at a team who out-rebounded the home team 44 to 28 (including a 14-5 offensive rebounding advantage), and you look at a team who scored 80 points all the while and you’d have to believe that’s the team who won the game.  But it’s those damn turnovers.  And it’s a Washington State team who shot 47% from three and 48% overall.

This game isn’t going to kill us.  It’s not going to lead to our downfall, nor is it going to lead to their running the table in the second half.  The Cougs are too inconsistent to have any hope of going 9-0 the rest of the way.  It does bring us back to the pack a little bit, since Arizona won both of their games this week.  I don’t like being 7-2 and tied with the Wildcats when I could’ve had that 1-game cushion with the game yet to be played down in Tucson.  Gotta take care of business this week down in the state of Oregon, though.  And we gotta have revenge on our minds when Wazzu crosses the mountains to play us again.

By the way, I don’t really care that their fans stormed the court after the win.  If beating the Number 17 team in the nation is like their winning the Super Bowl, then I really feel sorry for that school and its fanbase.  Still doesn’t change the fact that we’re poaching their football recruits.  Still doesn’t change the fact that we’re ranked in basketball and they’re not.

Suck it Cougs.
