Huskies/Huskers Round 3, Part 1

Don’t know if you guys are aware of this, but we’ve got a bit of a football game on our hands this Saturday.  I know I’m excited because this’ll be the first time all season where I get to watch the Huskies play football when I’m not completely shitfaced (probably).

We’re looking at a big test not just in our own season, but for the Pac-12 as a whole!  I read somewhere today that we were something like the 4th ranked conference in college football behind the SEC, Big 12 and Big 10.  And while I get it, the west coast gets no respect, it’s not like we’ve done a whole helluva lot to DESERVE respect.  The Ace in our hole, Oregon/LSU, went south on the Pac-12 (not that I’m complaining, because Fuck The Ducks); and you have to look at a school like Oregon State blowing a game against a D-II school.  All the little things in between have added up to the Pac-12 getting limited respect.  Sure, we can build that respect back up by keeping a bunch of teams ranked as the season goes on; but the Huskies specifically can do something THIS WEEK to build that respect back up.

The only other ranked team the Pac-12 plays this week (aside from the Huskers) is Texas, who has to go out and play UCLA.  Texas is only ranked 23rd, so it’s not like that’s a big to-do.  The Huskers are ranked 10th, AND they’re at home.  If Washington can go in there and shock the world, you’d have to think that would cut the Big 10 down a little bit while making the Pac-12 look that much better in the eyes of the national media.

Plus, you know, you gotta think we’d see Washington in the Top 25.  That’s by no means a lock, but there’s a really good chance.

Aside from helping the Pac-12, and helping our overall college football ranking, a win in Nebraska would just be a huge boost psychologically.  All those games we circled at the beginning of the season as being surefire losses (Oregon, Stanford, USC, probably Utah) would suddenly take on greater importance because they would no longer be guaranteed L’s.

A win at Nebraska makes us 3-0 when we host Cal the following week.  A win there puts us 4-0 when we go into Utah the week after.  All of a sudden, LOOK OUT.  The Huskies would be on the roll of all rolls, our confidence would be at an all-time high (or, rather, at a high for the last 10 years or so), and we’d be in the picture for the Pac-12 title game.

Not that I’m SAYING we’d make it to the Pac-12 title game if we beat Nebraska.  I’m just saying with that kind of boost, we’d be in the picture.  Way in the back, behind those two behemoths Oregon & Stanford.

Later in the week, I’ll get into what Washington needs to do to get the W.  Who’s up for some hopeless optimism before all of our dreams are dashed this Saturday afternoon?
