Husky Basketball Making Dawg Fans Proud

I just realized I didn’t write fuck-all about the Huskies last week.  In their final two home games, they took care of business against the Arizona schools in workmanlike fashion.  The ASU performance was sloppy but effective-enough, forcing them into 19 turnovers and benefiting from 10 missed free throws.  Then, on Senior Day, we beat the Wildcats in a way rarely seen by this particular Husky team:  making only 3 for 18 from behind the arc, yet limiting our turnovers to what HAS to be a season-low 5 (you read that right, not 5 turnovers by Tony Wroten; 5 turnovers by the entire TEAM).

The Huskies sit today in 2nd place, a half-game behind Cal in the win column.  Behind us, we’ve got Arizona, Oregon & Colorado all with 5 losses to essentially put them out of reach and (pretty much) guarantee us a slot in the Top 4 of the Pac-12 Tournament (I’m going to eat those fucking words if we lose out and have to play an extra game).  A tough game awaits us against Wazzu tomorrw at 5pm, but just as tough a game awaits Cal on Sunday in Colorado.

We could be talking about a Husky team all alone in first place come Oscar night!

As I wrote last time, that defeat at home to South Dakota State was a killer, without a doubt THE low point in this season.  We were 5-5 to start out, with one more game before conference play.  Since:  we’ve gone 14-3 to land in a first place tie for all intents and purposes.  We all know Romar’s teams tend to get better as the season goes on, but this is one for the ages!

In the past, you could argue that his teams were underachieving, that they should’ve started out better and continued to kick ass from there.  In this year, you could argue that this team is TERRIBLE.  And to turn this team – who couldn’t gel, couldn’t figure out how to play with one another, who had no real leaders in its first 10 games – into a Tournament contender is nothing short of a miracle.

These last 9 weeks have been a pleasure to witness; I wasn’t singing this tune back when we were 5-5, that’s for damn sure.

No, this team probably won’t do much when push comes to shove.  It’ll be lucky to win AH game in the Tourney, if it gets there at all.  But, the fact that we’re talking about this at all is amazing to the me of 9 weeks ago.  I hope we’re able to snatch a victory tomorrow night, and I hope we’re able to parlay next week into an At Large birth.  Let’s go Dawgs!
