Are you stoked or what???
Remember last year’s team? You know, the one that was good enough to win the Pac-12 Regular Season with a 14-4 record, but wasn’t good enough to make the NCAA Tournament because they lost in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament and because they had zero quality wins because the Pac-12 was super-shitty and they lost their two opportunities for quality wins against Duke and Marquette? Remember that team? Remember all the fun and excitement we had in the NIT until we reached the semifinals in New York and lost to Minnesota?
Did you like that team? Is that something you might be interested in watching again? Because BOY HOWDY, do I have a deal for you! Here’s the gist:
Last year’s team … minus its two best players, who were both drafted into the NBA.
POW! Huh? How ’bout it? Doesn’t that sound like good times? Doesn’t that sound like something you’d want to watch OVER and OVER and OVER again? Only, with the players getting worse and worse each and every year, because nobody wants to fucking go to Washington when there’s Kentucky and Arizona and Duke and North Carolina and Syracuse and Texas and UCLA and seemingly dozens upon dozens of more-attractive schools out there?
I mean, shit, at Washington the coaches are gonna want you to play DEFENSE!!! That’s crazy talk! No high school stud with eyes on the NBA wants to come to college to play DEFENSE! Defense doesn’t get you in the fuckin’ LEAGUE! Defense just makes you a more well-rounded player and will ultimately make you a better pro in the long run … but defense won’t get you noticed by pro scouts! Defense won’t get you drafted in the Top 10!
In case you couldn’t tell, the Huskies just lost to the Albany
Marmadukes Great Danes last night by a point. They couldn’t hit free throws, they couldn’t make 3-pointers, they lost Suggs to injury, they couldn’t stop the dribble-drive. In short, they futzed around for 38 minutes and thought they could turn it on in the final two to defeat a CLEARLY-inferior opponent. One of MANY clearly-inferior opponents on this clearly-inferior fucking schedule.
The Huskies play UConn. THAT is their non-conference schedule. They play UConn and a whole bunch of middling-to-terrible bullshit. So, get ready to watch a team play down to the level of their opponents, then get caught flat-footed against the good one, because it’s happening ALL OVER AGAIN.
Remember last year’s loss to South Dakota State? Remember how we tried to rationalize it by saying, “Well, this is a better team than we’re giving them credit for. Look, they even made the Tournament!” Fuck that. You’re Washington and you’re at home. Remember when playing in Hec-Ed meant something? Remember all those multi-season winning streaks? What the fuck happened to THAT? Now, we’re losing to the likes of South Dakota State and Albany in less than a calendar year?
Look, this isn’t your uncle’s College Basketball landscape. You can’t pick off 20 wins and expect to make the Tournament. Hell, you can’t even win your conference’s regular season title! You need QUALITY wins. And, I’m not gonna lie to you, but there are exactly ZERO quality wins in the Pac-12 this year. If you’re a team in the Pac-12, you’ve got to go out of conference to get your quality wins.
Yeah, Syracuse can play a bunch of non-conference creampuffs every year and make the Tourney; you know why? Because they’re in a conference with GOOD teams.
Washington is in a conference that’s just a notch above the fucking Sun Belt. We’re not QUITE Gonzaga, but we’re treated like we’re Gonzaga because no one has any ounce of respect for the Pac-12 anymore. You can’t blame NBA defectors. There has been too many consecutive years of this bullshit. Oh, all your talent left to go to the NBA? Too bad, recruit and reload! If you can’t do that, then guess what? You’re a lower-tier conference and you’re going to be treated as such. No one cares what UCLA and Arizona did 20 years ago. It’s what you’ve done LATELY. And the Pac-12 hasn’t done shit lately except add two schools in Utah and Colorado who clearly don’t deserve to play on our level.
This year, the Huskies play 8 non-conference teams who are God-awful. They play two teams (Seton Hall and Nevada) who are okay, but no great shakes. They are by no means “quality wins”. If they somehow get past Seton Hall in that little mini-tournament, the Huskies can play Ohio State. Ohio State and UConn would be quality wins, I guess, but UConn JUST crawled back into the Top 25; who knows if they’ll still be there at season’s end?
Of course, if the Huskies lose to Seton Hall, we get Rhode Island. Who can’t see THAT happening?
Don’t hold out a lot of hope for this Husky team. If you like basketball, watch them and be entertained (sometimes). I’ll do a post getting into the players eventually, but right now I’m so thoroughly disgusted by the schedule and by their effort against the Great Fucking Danes that I just don’t want to think about this any more.
